What is Pantone?

Pantone provides a universal language of colour that enables colour-critical decisions.

You may of heard the word PMS? PMS stands for 'Pantone Matching System', a proprietary numbering system for colours used in graphic design. PMS colours are globally used, they are crucial in the printing & manufacturing industries.

As as example - When a designer in New York City specifies a certain Pantone colour number, the manufacturer in Shanghai immediately knows exactly which colour they want – and how to achieve it. Even though they may not speak the same language, they both understand the global colours of Pantone.

You may be asking, "But all I want is some coloured vinyl, why do I need to know all this"? The truth is you don't, but I think understanding how something works and why is important.

If you said to us, "OK, can you please print me a green"? Of course we can. We can print you a green. But here lies the issue. What shade? How dark? More blue or more yellow? I can guarantee what I think of when you say green, will not be what you envisioned. Here is where PMS colours come into play. Using the colour chart you are able to select a colour, we are then able to print the colour and know what we are sending out is accurate.

It is important to note that colours will always appear different on a screen. Different materials, including gloss level will also affect and alter the colour.
